The Goldflower Defense Committee

The trial of Kathy Thomas is ove but the problem is not. Every day women are violently attacked. either inside their homes or on the streets. The Goldflower Defense Committee was formed for "the purpose of affirming women's rights to defend themselves against violent attack

For those who have forgotten or who are unaware of the case, here is a synopsis:

The goldflower Defense Committee was formed shortly before the Kathy Thomas trial. Ms. Thomas lived as the common-law wite of Reuben Daniels for three and a half years. After the first six months, he began to beat her. The attacks increased in frequency and severity until January 12, 1978, when she fought back. A week of terror, a pistol-whipping on Sunday, continuous threats, a black eye on Tuesday, and then knowing she was about to suffer another severe beating and fearing for her life, Kathy shot Daniels. Her struggle for survival brought an indictment for murder from the Cuyahoga County Grand Jury.

The result of the trial was a verdict of guilty. Judge Kilbane immediately sentenced Ms. Thomas to 15 years to life and denied a request that she be let

Out on bond pending appeal. However, the Cuyahoga County Court of Appeals released Ms. Thomas on bond until her appeal is heard.

The Goldflower Committee meets once a month to keep abreast of the legal aspects of her case and discuss what needs to happen next. It hopes to change from an ad hoc group to a more structured one with more activists, providing women who are victims of violence with economic, emotional and

legal support. Better decisions and creative solutions come from different individuals sharing their ideas and their skills united around a common cause. The community of Cleveland cannot be educated by a few, but only by the united effort of many.

The Committee wants your participation and help. It needs a core of people who can direct their energy into creating a viable group with impact on the community.

HALLOWEEN GALA A HUGE SUCCESS

Inhibition and ideology were tossed to the wind on October 28 as a hundred or so costumed women celebrated an early All Hallows Eve at the Women's Growth Cooperative Third Annual Benefit bash. The DJ not only expertly made the music flow, but set the standard of elegance and flash attired in a black tuxedo set off by a ruffled red shirt. She was too cold! It wasn't all butch drag as one lady set the partygoers to whistling when she unabashedly strolled by attired in a lace corselette, panties, garter, and stockings. The imagination and fantasy lives of the guests were displayed as the revelers revealed their predilection for the fearsome, amusing, glamorous, and grotesque. Devils and witches were in attendance and so were Quasimodo and the Mummy! A Harvey-esque cottontailed white rabbit hopped in for the festivities. A dashing masked buccaneer kept us guessing her identity while we admired her plumed hat and silken britches. A political statement that eluded most of us was made by one twosome dressed in "butch" and "femme" T-shirts. People didn't get it because they all said that if the couple wanted to make a statement, the two should have swapped shirts. Two ladies in shimmering satin gowns displayed flash and trash, one as a French courtesan with her money in her bosom, the other as a saloon girl with heart -painted as a beauty mark on her cheek.

Age was no limit at this party. One older "gentleman" who had seen more prosperous days was now down and out in his too large jacket and cheeks whose ruddiness didn't seem to come from good health. But he wasn't over the hill yet and showed he had kept up with the latest disco craze as he boogied with his partners, one a proper little woman whose ample bosom was firmly corseted in her flowered dress and on whose head was a prim little hat. Later in the evening I saw that dress again and was surprised to see the older lady had become a young gal minus the hat, the corset and the

bosom!

One handsome mustachioed cowboy arrived looking more drugstore than ranch hand -despite the six-shooter at "his" hip in quietly expensive

duds. Two old-style butch types showed up, one looking very 1950's in her d.a.. the other quite disreputable, poured into black leather pants, a motorcycle jacket, cap and shades. Chains were also in evidence, slung around the hips of a punk in T-shirt and safety pins. A Rubenesque pink fairy floated among the guests bestowing wishes with her magic wand. A many armed spiderwoman explained her costume represented her conquest of araneaphobia. It was a delight to see her fuzzy arms dance.

Lest things had gotten out of hand, a referee was present complete with whistle and repertoire of hand signals from street and playing field. A lovely Hampshire Road home provided an elegant if crowded setting for this great social event that kept people dancing and ogling each other till 4 a.m.

EFCO: Resources for Choice

Education for Freedom of Choice in Ohio (EFCO) has been working throughout the summer to compile a resource center of books, brochures and slides on all aspects of the abortion issue. Many brochures and articles are available free of charge and slides or books may be borrowed from the resource center. In addition, EFCO has organized its first group of speakers to conduct informational programs for professional, church and community groups interested in the issue. With these two resources, a core of speakers and a wide variety of educational materials, EFCO is ready to accept referrals from member organizations of the Reproductive Freedom Coalition. for speaking engagements and workshops.

While EFCO does not speak on contraception or do family planning education programs, it can develop workshops, panel discussions or debates on the legal, medical or religious aspects of abortion. Please refer requests for speakers directly to the EFCO office, 439 The Arcade, Cleveland, Ohio 44114, or call 579-0028.
